DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION:

we accept applications on a rolling basis until designated scholarship funds are exhausted

*A list of upcoming workshops and retreats is available here.

***

The FWR reserves the right not to award scholarships if it does not identify an appropriate candidate or scholarship funds are exhausted. Scholarships are applied directly to tuition and cannot be redeemed for cash. Students must meet any course prerequisites. Registration in any class is subject to space limitations--scholarship recipients are considered registered when they pay the balance of the tuition for the workshop or retreat. Scholarships must be used for the workshop or retreat which the applicant originally designates, and cannot be carried over to a subsequent workshop, retreat or term.

The FWR Workshop Scholarship Fund is named in honor of PATRICIA GREEN, whose support made the creation of the FWR possible. Patricia Green has written and produced iconic TV dramas including North and South, Cagney and Lacey, L.A. Law, China Beach, Chicago Hope and Christy.  Nominated for seven Emmy awards, she has won three and been honored with the Humanitas Prize for promoting human dignity and freedom through film, as well as Christopher, GLAAD, Golden Globe and Scott Newman awards.  She has taught screen and television writing at the University of Southern California, UCLA, The American Film Institute, and the Flatiron Writers Room.

Thanks to a generous donation, we are pleased to announce the creation of the frances marion** Co-Working Scholarship, which will give the recipient 24/7 access (subject to reservation availability) to our quiet writing space in West Asheville.

This scholarship carries all the benefits of a regular Co-Working membership, including 10% off any FWR-sponsored class for which the recipient registers during the term of the scholarship.

“I think we understand—as writers, creators—the power and importance of place, both within our creative work and also in terms of our own physicality—where we work. Receiving the Frances Marion Co-Working Scholarship meant the world to me—or at least a very large portion of my sanity. FWR gave me a place to write, to exist, provided me some sense of security, and a chance to find my footing—not just as a writer but as a human, trying to exist in the world.” — Sam Whicker, 3rd quarter 2021 Scholarship Recipient

This monthly scholarship, awarded quarterly, is renewable for up to the full 3 months of the quarter if you are making good use of the space (We define “making good use of the space” as writing in the space a minimum average of once per week during each month, and abiding by all FWR Co-Working policies). We reserve the right to transfer the scholarship to another applicant if we find you are not making good use of the space.

Before applying for the scholarship, please read our Co-Working Contract and Co-Working Manual to make sure our writer Co-Working program is a good fit for you.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE 5:00PM (EASTERN TIME) ON:

MARCH 1 FOR THE QUARTER BEGINNING APRIL 1

JUNE 1 FOR THE QUARTER BEGINNING JULY 1

SEPTEMBER 1 FOR THE QUARTER BEGINNING OCTOBER 1

**At the request of our donor, this scholarship is named after Frances Marion, an American screenwriter, journalist, author, and film director, often cited as one of the most renowned and prolific screenwriters of the 20th century. During the course of her career, she wrote over 325 scripts, and was the first writer to win two Academy Awards. She left Hollywood in 1946 to devote more time to writing stage plays and novels.

Her extraordinary talent, her independent spirit, and her prolific output as a writer enabled her to secure a seat at the table as a female writer in a male-dominated business, and make her a great aspirational model for all writers.
