Workshops and Events

The Flatiron Writers are committed to offering high quality workshops for writers in western North Carolina. We present workshops of our own (see description of our Creating Your Writing Life workshop below) and also sponsor classes by visiting experts.  We have offered workshops on reading your work with Mel Ryane, plot with Lynne Barrett, screen adaptation with Maryedith Burrell and legal issues for writers with Heather Newton. We also sponsor salons and staged readings to promote writers whose work we admire.

Our signature workshop is Creating Your Writing Life
This is an all-day workshop designed for those who want to make consistent and sustainable room in their lives for writing. It’s about nurturing that creative space within you, and feeding it with production and pages. Let us help you uncover the resources within to get yourself writing regularly and with purpose.

This workshop is for you if you are:

  • Just starting a writing project and need to develop a plan of attack
  • Stuck in the middle of a story or novel and can’t seem to finish
  • Finding it hard to make time in your life for writing
  • Wanting to make contact with fellow writers for support and advice.

We will focus on four topics:

    • Establishing Routines and Rituals
    • Enhancing Space and Environment
    • Honing Your Writing Process
    • Building a Writing Community

Bring a brown-bag lunch and drink and enjoy an opportunity over lunch to connect with other writers to form or join critique groups.
