Announcement:

We are delighted to announce that Barbara Taylor of Charlotte has won the Flatiron Writers Short Fiction Contest for her story, "Cootie Boy." Final judge Marjorie Klein said of the story, "I loved 'Cootie Boy' -- it was well-written with great, offbeat but believable characters, and very funny. It moved right along with fast pacing, and still had depth and pathos." Barbara is a graduate of Meredith College and earned an M.A. from UNC-Charlotte. She is currently working on a novel. Barbara will receive a $100 prize. Her winning story is posted here Cootie Boy

Marjorie Klein also selected for honorable mention Peter Solet's story "In the Desert" which she called "finely-written with a flawed but sympathetic narrator; its setting (the desert and its changes as the story progressed) echoed the plot very effectively." Peter has lived in Madison County with his wife Katherine and three cats for ten years and retired last year. His poetry has appeared in the Asheville Poetry Review, Ars Medica, and Western NC Woman, and is forthcoming in Arestes and Quaddity. He will receive a copy of Irons in the Fire: Stories from the Flatiron Writers.
